The Three Fundamental Principles
Who is Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?
He is: Muhammad Ibn Abdullah Bin Abdul Muttalib Bin Hashim Bin Abd-Manaf Bin Qusayy Bin
Kilab Bin Murrah Bin Ka'b Bin Lu'ayy Bin Ghalib Bin Fihr Bin Malik Bin an-Nadr Bin Kinanah Bin
Khuzaymah Bin Mudrikah Bin Ilyas Bin Mudar Bin Nizar Bin Ma'add Bin Adnan, descendant of
Prophets Isma'el and Ibrahim.
Reference: Sahih Bukhari
He was a man of noble lineage born in Mecca in the Year of the Elephant (570C.E.) in the
month of Rabi al-Awwal. He grew up as an orphan in the care of his grandfather Abdul
Muttalib, then, after his grandfather's death, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
was in the care of his uncle, Abu Talib.
Throughout his childhood, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, purified and protected him from the
filth of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) and, therefore he never exalted or worshipped any of the idols of
Makkah in his entire life. He neither attended any of the events of disbelief even though they
would request his presence because Allah, The Exalted, prevented and protected him from
such acts. A reference to this statement can be found in a hadith reported by Ali Ibn Abu Talib
(may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
"I have never worshipped an idol and neither have I ever drunk alcohol. I always
knew that what they were upon was disbelief."
Reference: As-Suyooti, Khasa'is al-Kubra [1/150]
He was gifted with every beautiful moral and manner to the point that he was known in his
community of Makkah as al-Amin, the trustworthy and honest, even before he was
commissioned a Prophet of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
At the age of 40 years old, while engaged in a meditative retreat in the Cave of Hira,
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) received his first revelation from Allah, the
Exalted, through Angel Jibril (upon whom be peace). These first words were,
"Read! In the Name of Your Lord Who has created all that exists. He has created man
from a clot. Read! And Your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught by the pen.
He has taught man that which he knew not..." (Surah Al Alaq verses 1-5)
This revelation known as the Qur'aan continued for twenty-three years of his life, 13 years in
Makkah and 10 years in Madinah. He was chosen by Allah, the Exalted, as the Seal of the
Prophets to convey the message of 'La ilaha ill Allah' (there is nothing worthy of worship
except Allah) and establish at-Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah) to all of mankind and warn
those who did not submit to Allah's will.
His way of life and character was the Qur'aan and he was the most humble of people. He was a
mercy to everyone around him, as well as a mercy to the
generations after his death through his Sunnah, which is the prime example for all Muslims live
by. He was the most generous of people, especially during the month of Ramadan. He had the
best of morals, manners, and physical constitution. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings
be upon him) was the best of them with regards to companionship and good nature, as well as
the most courageous of them. He was the one who had the most knowledge of Allah and had
the most fear of Allah.
He would never become angry for personal motives and neither did he take revenge for
personal motives. He only became angry when the sacred laws
of Allah, the Exalted, were violated and nothing would appease his anger until the truth was
aided. He would command with gentleness and was always concerned about his Ummah
(community). He lived his life serving and worshipping Allah, the Exalted, and did not depart
from this world until the Message of Islam was fully propagated and implemented with the
central teachings of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah.

His legacy can still be felt today through the actions of many Muslims across the world. His
Sunnah is the prime example Muslims live their life by. It is this
man and his legacy that rank him the number one most influential figure in human history by
the historian, Michael J. Hart, who stated,
"It is this unparalleled combination of secular and religious influence which I feel
entitles Muhammad to be considered the most influential single figure in human
history."
May Allah grant us strength, knowledge, and endurance to strive in the way of Allah, the
Exalted, and live our lives according to the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet so we can be
victorious on the Day of Judgment insha'Allah. Ameen
