What is Islam?

Linguistically, Islam comes from the root word Sa La Ma, which means 'peace' and its literal
definition is in the form of a verb meaning 'submission.'

However, in the context of the Deen of Islam, the meaning is much deeper. It is a way of life
and means to submit and surrender oneself with sincerity and obedience to the Will and
Oneness of Allah, Glory be He the Exalted, in order to achieve peace in this life and the
hereafter. It is the essential purpose of life and accepting it as such is the only way to gain the
pleasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Through this submission, a believer will acquire
tranquility and peace of mind, live a decent, clean, and obedient life and look forward for a
sound, secure, and happy life in the Hereafter.

Islam is the Deen or faith which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has sent Prophet Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon him) with. Allah made it the last of the religions and perfected it
for His creation. He made it a completion of His favors upon mankind and chose it to be their
way of life.  No other religion is accepted from anyone except the Deen of Islam as Allah says
in the Qur'aan in Surah Al Ma'idah (The Table Spread) verse 3:

"This day, I have perfected your religion for you, and completed My Favor upon you,
and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."

Islam embraces all of the human welfare that is comprised in the previous religions and it is
distinguished above all religions in its suitability for all times, places, and nations. It is a Deen
of Truth and whoever truly adheres to it, Allah guarantees him victory and makes him prevail
over everyone else who does not.

Islam commands:

The Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) and forbids shirk (ascribing associates and partners to
Allah).
Truthfulness and forbids lying.
Justice and forbids oppression.
Trustworthiness and forbids treachery.
Faithfulness and forbids betrayal.
To be good and dutiful to one's parents and forbids being disrespectful to them.
Keep ties of kinship with relatives and forbids severing the ties with them.
To have good relations with one's neighbors and forbids all forms of ill-treatment to the
neighbors.
