Who is Allah?

Very often one will here the Arabic word "Allaah" being used in regards to Islaam. The word
"Allaah" is simply the Arabic word for Almighty God, and is the same word used by Arabic
speaking Christians and Jews. If one were to pick up an Arabic translation of the Bible, one
would see the word "Allaah" being use where the word "God" is used in English. Actually, the
Arabic word for Almighty God, "Allaah", is quite similar to the word for God in other Semitic
languages - for example, the Hebrew word for God is "Elah". For various reasons, some
non-Muslims mistakenly believe that Muslims worship a different God than the God of Moses
and Abraham and Jesus. This is certainly not the case, since the Pure Monotheism of Islam
calls all people to the worship of the God of Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and all of the other
prophets.

Linguistically, Allah is derived from the root word ilaah meaning 'an object that is worship' as
defined by many classical linguistic scholars of the Arabic language including Ibn Mandhoor,
the scholar of Lisan Al Arabi (The Arabic tongue). Similar to the definite article 'the' which is
added to a word to give it exclusivity, the Arabic word 'Al' is adding to the beginning of 'ilaah' to
form the word '
Allah' meaning 'the only object that is worshipped'. This creates complete
exclusivity to the object that is worship, which is Allah. However, there is no actual word in the
English language that can translate the word Allah. Stating that Allah translates as "The God"
is not correct and does not totally define the beauty of this word due to the fact that the word
'god' can be made plural and ascribed a gender.

Since the human mind is limited in its knowledge and scope, it is impossible for it to understand
something which has not limits. Allah is above our comprehension and stands alone without
any question. Therefore, Allah has described Himself in order that man may have a better
understanding of who He truly is.

In the aspect to the Deen of Islam or the faith of Islam, Allah is the formal name of Ar-Rabb
(The Lord), Al-Azeez (The All-Mighty) and the 'Only One worthy of our worship' as we are
informed from the Qur'aan itself in Surah Al-Ikhlaas (Chapter of Sincerity) where Allah says:

"Say O Muhammad: 'He is Allah, the One, the Eternally Besought. He begets not, nor
was He begotten.  And there is nothing comparable unto Him."

We believe in Allah, the only true Lord (ruboobiyyah), the One free from defect, the only true
deity deserving worship (uloohiyyah). He is the sole Creator of the slaves, the Granter of
kindness and goodness to them, the One who take charge of their provisions and He is fully
aware of both their secrets and that which they openly manifest. He is the One who rewards
those who obey Him and punishes those who disobey Him. It is for this worship that Allah
created thehumans and jinn and he commanded them with it.

In Surah Adh-Dhariyat (The Winds that Scatter) verse 56, Allah says:

"And I (Allah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me
(Alone)."

Allah is the ONLY ONE worthy of our worship and praise. This is the primary purpose for our
creation and our only path to eternal success in the Hereafter.  Our worship is Allah's right as
can be found in an authentic hadith (narration) reported in Saheeh Bukhari:

Narrated by Mu'adh bin Jabal:  "While I was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be
upon him) and between me and him there was only the back of the saddle, he said, 'O
Mu'adh!'  I replied, 'Labbaik, O Allah's Apostle and Sa'daik!' He said, 'Do you know what is
Allah's right upon His slaves?'  I said, 'Allah and His Apostle know best.'  He said, 'Allah's right
upon His slaves is that they should worship Him alone and not worship anything else besides
Him.'  Then he  proceeded for a while and then said, 'O Mu'adh bin Jabal!'  I replied, 'Labbaik,
O Allah's Apostle, Sa'daik!'  He said, 'Do you know what is the right of the slaves upon Allah if
they do that?'  I replied, 'Allah and His Apostle know best.'  He said, 'The right of the slaves
upon Allah is that He will not punish them if they do that.'

We believe in His Names and Attributes (al-asmaa was-sifaat) and to Him along belong the
most beautiful Name and Attributes of completeness and
perfection.

We believe that He is:

"Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever
Living, the One Who sustains and protects all thatexists. Neither slumber, nor sleep
overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth.
Who is he that can intercede with Himexcept with His Permission? He knows what
happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the
Hereafter . And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that
which He wills. His Kursee extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no
fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great."
(Surah Al-Baqarah v. 255)

We believe that:

"There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. To Him belong
the keys of the heavens and the earth, He enlarges provision for whom He wills, and
straitens (it for whom He wills). Verily! He is the All-Knower of everything."
(Surah
Ash-Shura v. 11-12)

We believe that:

"If the sea were ink for (writing) the Words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be
exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished, even if we brought
(another sea) like it for its aid."
(Surah Al-Kahf v. 109)

We believe that He:

"...created the heavens and the earth in six Days and then Istawa (rose over) the
Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty), disposing the affair of all things."
(Surah Yunus v. 3)

We believe that Allah the Exalted is with His creation and He is over His Throne. He knows their
condition, hears their speech, sees their actions, manages their affairs, sustains the poor and
grants relief to the divested. He grants dominion to whoever He Wills, removes it from whoever
He Wills, honors whom He Wills and debases whom He Wills.

In His Hand is all good and He has power over all things. So when His affair is like this, then He
truly is with His creation; even though He, in reality, is above them over His Throne as Allah
says in the Qur'an:

"There is nothing like unto Him, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing."
(Surah Ash-Shura v. 11)
